Fluid therapy
Fluids
are routinely used for all anaesthetics lasting more than 30
minutes, for dogs and cats over eight years and any debilitated
animal or animals showing liver or kidney problems on pre-operative
blood screens.
Blood pressure (photo,
right) is carefully monitored to prevent kidney damage.
Fluids can be
administered by a hospital grade infusion pump, which accurately
measures both the amount of, and rate at which, fluids are given to
the patient.
For
animals who are hospitalised for longer than a day on fluids, we
have spiral extension sets which allow them to move about more
freely - as well as connectors enabling drips to be disconnected so
that dogs can be taken out for regular walks.
